Blow-Drying the Frog & Other Parenting Adventures

Real humor for real families
What a delight to read! Though the stories are from "everyday" parents, the book is professionally edited and produced. I appreciated and could relate to many of the stories. There is a good mix of humor, from rolling-on-the-floor-laughing to smiling-and-nodding-my-head. The stories have a nice variety of themes and are about many ages of children, not just the little ones. I bought one for myself and several more to give as gifts to parents, grandparents and parents-to-be!

Parents Need This Book!
This book should be in every family library! The stories are short and funny -- so parents can get a quick fix of laughter while they go about their busy day. I've given copies to friends and family as gifts.

I laughed so hard
These stories were all funny, believable and entertaining. They helped take my mind off the world situaion and focus a little more on enjoying my kids. It was a relief to read a parenting book that doesn't make me feel guilty for whatever I'm not doing in a certain way or lectures me or repeats conversations that no real child and adult would ever have. These were real kids and real parents, in real situations, and I laughed out loud.

The Book of Bread
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (October, 1986)
Authors: Judith Jones, Evans Jones, and Lauren Jarrett
Average review score:

A worthy addition to one's collection
I bought this book when I was searching for a specific recipe. This title happened to have that which I was seeking at the time, and I brought it home. I will confess, it is not a book I use often, as I prefer a different style of bread than many of the recipes presented in it, but it still is a good volume with good recipes.

I am a bread baker who likes a plain, "honest" loaf of bread, not enriched with a lot of fruit, vegetables, nuts and cheeses. If I want that kind of bread, I make something like cinnamon buns or a stollen or something. This book is full of recipes that use a variety of these ingredients, and that is a style to which I personally do not adhere. There are recipes that require such things as pumpkin, carrots, and other things not normally found in regular loaf breads.

That said, the recipes in this book are top notch. I have made a few of the more "plain" recipes, and the results have never been less than exceptional. Even if I do not bake in the style presented in this book, I cannot fault the recipes. It's a style issue, not a quality issue.

The book is full of very interesting and informative tidbits that make this book an interesting read in addition to being a cookbook. One section describes the origin of doughnuts (and specifically, the hole in the middle). Another describes an interesting account of where Anadama bread gained its name.

This book has no photographs. Rather, it has lots of pencil drawings to go along with many of the carefully written recipes. The instructions are easy to follow, but the drawings add a nice touch that make the recipes even more complete in many places.

Overall, this book is very well written and organized.

This book has an exceptional recipe for Monkey Bread, the best I have used so far.

If you want a large collection of "plain" recipes, I recommend you look at something else instead of this book. However, if you like variety and you enjoy recipes that make use of unusual ingredients for bread (at least as far as normal loaf bread is concerned), this book will serve you exceedingly well. It's a great book for the adventuresome baker.

In a 250+cookbook library, this ranks at the top.
I have cooked (and baked) professionally for 20 years. I have amassed a library of 250+ books and this book continuously gets more use than any other. Primiarily because I love to bake and trust The Book of Bread recipes.

Practical and delicious
Judging from the contents, this is a book of execellence. It contains over 200 recipes on a wide varieties of breads. Unlike other bread or baking books I have, the recipes here are easy to follow, correct in measures, and most of all, taste fantastic. It also contains many bread-making tips/techniques that made a huge difference in the results. If you make bread by hand, or are attempted to try, this is the book. The best $20 I ever invested. Warning. No color photo. Only hand drawings.

Born in Violence/Bathed in Blood

Great History
Born in Violence/Bathed in Blood is a very good book that gives an excellent viewpoint of our history. It is not a one-sided book, but one that looks at history from an objective point of view. This is good classroom material.

Sad but true!
This book describes the history of America that we must not forget. It gives us a glimpse into the quality of life (or lack thereof) for freed blacks. The listing by states of blacks that were lynched is particulary touching. This is a must have for students of history.

This book portrays a different point of view on our history.
This is a good book to retain as a historical reference. It portrays a different point of view on our history. The writer must have done a lot of research to put this together. The section on lynchings, showing all those names, is unforgettable. This is a "must read" for all, especially history buffs.

A great book for all ages to read!!!
My wife received this book as a gift from a co-worker. I was intrigued by the cover and decided to read it myself. Wow, what an incredible book, an amazing story and what an awesome God we serve! After reading this book, I felt convicted to be a better husband and father.

Excellent!
An incredible book of God's grace -- a must read for those who are hurting!

Texas mother of four
I've been married for 16 years and often wondered what I would do if I lost my husband. Sherry's book encouraged me to know that God will be with us in any situation in life. She is a courageous woman to share her story.

Buddy Goes to Canterbury Camp
Published in Paperback by Inst of Higher Living (September, 1995)
Author: Beverly Marie Jones
Average review score:

This is an excellent counseling tool for troubled youth
Buddy Goes to Canterbury Camp is an exceptional novel about a teenage boy faced with tremendous pressure to choose a path tainted toward destruction or a path of positive change.

During the course of the story, Buddy is sent to live with an older couple who are the owners of Canterbury Camp. The couple demonstrates unconditional love toward Buddy and the other teenage boys who live at the camp; thus cultivating an atmosphere of inner healing and revitalization of broken hearts and spirits. Buddy and the other teenage boys are given a second chance at their lives, while incorporating positive character changes.

The author stresses intergrity a great deal in her book, and the importance of developing a sense of overall purpose for one's life which is essential for the main character to develop.

I applaud Ms. Jones for writing such a brilliant piece of work at such a time as this; youth today need guidance and character keys such as intergrity that will enable them to become future leaders of tomorrow equipped with strong moral and personal values.

My desire is to see this book at every grade school and high school across the country as a counseling tool to help troubled youth. This book is a necessary counseling tool and if you are a counsellor like myself whether in the field of law or social work or teaching . . . "Buddy Goes to Canterbury Camp" would provide and answer countless questions that one might have on the topic of troubled youth.

This is a masterpiece -- we should all hope for a sequel.

Excellent tool for instilling integrity into today's youth
After reading this book, I believe the author has hit upon something that has been overlooked in today's youth. Every parent should read this book along with their child. It is excellent for teaching youths integrity and instilling principles that will last a life-time. In light of all the school shootings in this country, I believe what is taught in this book will help prevent such events from happening again. If we teach kids to love themselves, then they are less likely to get involved in self-destructive behavior.

a book every mother and child should read
Buddy Goes To CanterBury Camp is an exceptional book which should and must be read by both parentand children. It is a counseling tool that help parents understand what is inside of their children. Thanks for writing such a great book.

Recipes are great - taste great and down to earth
This book for a diabetic cook book uses the run of the mill ingredients and every recipe has been just great - tastes good too. Only the banana bread and I think I did not cook it long enough.

I am the author's son...
I grew up having these recipees rested on me (and my brother David). My mother invented the idea of low-fat good taste cooking. I watched her painstakingly test and re-test every recipee. She always insisted on honest feedback. And you'll reap the benefits by buying this book. A true Godsend for diabetics and dieters.

cool cuisine, healthy recipes + extras
Calculating cook is the book for people who like to eat good food, don't want to eat boring stuff, and like to cook. Recipes fit into diabetic exchanges (lots easier to keep track of than calories) and include extras for nondiabetics. All recipes come with calorie, exchange, fat content worked out by portion. I lost weight without grumbling too much by following the reccommended daily exchange. I am so sorry this is out of print. I lent my copy and it vanished. Hope it gets reprinted!

Carrot on a Stick

Carrot On A Stick
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. It's easy to read, entertaining and amusing.

I found myself unable to put it down, and if books were rated by smiles then this one is worth a mile of them.

Carrot On A Stick Is More Then Just A Book
Carrot On A Stick is not just a rectangular object with pages of words. This book is an inspiration to all who read it. The cover of the books reads " A Book about everything, Well almost everything." I can tell you, Carrot On A Stick is what it says it is and so much more.

As soon as you begin to read you immediately find yourself connecting to the Author, Billy Jones. This is a man who has "been there done that" so to speak. You find yourself in his poems and your father in his short stories. He shares real life experiences, with brutal honesty. He gives you an inside look at his life from past to present, as well as a look into what your own future will hold. As you read you will find yourself lost in the magical rhythm of his words.

Laughter seems to be one of this authors best medications for the soul. He will leave you in stitches with poems like " Drunkards prayer" and " A Traffic Jam at Wal-Mart."

He also knows how to tug at your heart strings, and gets your mind rolling with short stories like, "One Mans Dreams" and "What Are You Scared Of?"

This book comes from the heart of a man, not at all unlike you and I. He has been down and out and back up again. He gives his readers inspiration through poems, verses, and short stories.

To sum up Carrot On A Stick, I would have to say, it will make you laugh, cry, hurt, get angry, and most of all teach you something about yourself.

I have read many books, but have never found one that has touched my heart, and opened my mind like Carrot On A Stick Has done.

Carrot On A Stick
When I met Billy Jones he told me this was the type of book that even people who don't like to read would like. I'm one of those people but I bought a copy cause he said he'd sign it and I thought it might be worth something someday besides I never met anyone who wrote a book before. I kept it around the house a few days and one rainy day when I couldn't go to work and didn't have enough money to go to the bar I picked it up and had a blast. Billy told me I would laugh and cry and he was right. If books had been like this in school I might not have quit. I think Billy has written a book everyone will like. Oh yea, I know the guy that did the cover art too, Mickey Sizemore.

I showed it to my wife and she loved it. I'm going to have to get me another copy though cause I lent my copy out and it never came back. Sorry Amazon but I'll see Billy at the bar sometime and get another signed copy.

I would love to see this made into a movie - AWESOME!
The effects and details of this book are so breathtaking - I felt like I was there. Though based on fantasy - an altenate dimention that need "shiner" (special people who see more than the normal eye) - I felt like I was there and it was real. I still feel it is - the author brought both worlds so much to life that I still wish I was there - and will go back to visit often and can't wait for the next installment to this book.

Escape into another world - get lost in the land of Chimera.
I picked up this book from a friend and started to read - 3 hours later I realized I couldn't put it down. The charactors jump to life and become so real you don't want to leave them at the end of the story. The story itself is a unique version of two dimensions existing simutainously, one innocent, the other - our world. As the innocent begins to bleed through into our own world, it takes some special people - ones with the "shine" that can see the "auras" of life that few can. These special come together to discover that nothing in life in coincidence that there was a purpose for their whole life that led to this one point. Each charactor is unique and real and brings a wonderful life to this story that I can't imagine anyone not loving it.

The Christmas Miracle Of Jonathan Toomey Gift Set

Heartwarming Story
This is a heartwarming story of the power of children to warm and open broken hearts. A good story to read to children every Christmas.

Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey - the best book
This is a beautiful story. The author did a reading/slide show of this book at our school several years ago. When the lights came on, there wasn't a dry eye among the parents (and some of the kids)in attendance. I still get choked up when I read this to my children. Its truly a beautiful story. I've bought 6 copies through the years for friends & family when they have children. A must read at Christmas time.

Wonderful, heartwarming book!!!
I still read this book to my children every year and they are 14 & 18 years old. This is a wonderful book about the meaning of Christmas, and renewal of a human spirit. A widow with a small boy asks the town woodcarver to make a duplicate of the nativity set she had lost. Her little boy wants to watch the carver at work, and as he works, the little boy describes how each piece is supposed to look. From happy sheep, and a proud cow, to the important angel, smiling baby, and loving Mary, Thomas describes each of the figures, and the woodcarver captures the qualities. I have alump in my throat by the end every time I read it. You will cherish this book, I guarantee.
